Grab your sunscreen and water wings, it’s time for the Ross Island Kayak Tour, led by Portland Kayak. First-time kayakers and experienced paddlers alike will enjoy a unique perspective of Portland on this guided tour circumnavigating Ross Island on the Willamette River. We’ll paddle past an impressive blue heron rookery and might spot bald eagles and osprey as we glide by Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. There’s an unparalleled view of Portland’s skyline (including our own South Waterfront) on the way back to the dock. Cost is $25 per person for this normally $45-per-person tour. This real-life performing experience helps foster a new generation of incredible musicians.

This fundraiser will feature jeweler to the stars Tom Sauve, who will offer a selection of custom pieces for sale. A portion of the proceeds will go to the PROWUS Scholarship fund for Portland School of Rock. Music will be provided by John English, who will perform his tribute to Frank Sinatra, and refreshments will be provided.

Over the summer the City will be reviewing the street plans for South Waterfront.  This was recently posted on PDOT’s website: South Waterfront District Street Plan

Residents attended one Open House on June 11 and provided the city input and it seems that many of the suggestions will be taken into consideration for a comprehensive plan for the district.

Imagine a revolution in chamber music, performed anywhere and everywhere. Classical Revolution PDX performs chamber music in non-traditional venues like bars and cafes, making it accessible to everyone. By taking chamber music out of the recital hall, Classical Revolution PDX strives to show the public that this music is relevant and can be enjoyed by all.

The revolution starts with the PDX BIKER SYMPHONY, part of Pedalpalooza, at South Park Blocks, SW Park Ave and SW College St (gather at the southern end of the South Park Blocks). The procession will travel down the South Park Blocks starting at 4:00 p.m. and move on to South Waterfront, where they will “rock” chamber music style. Musicians who want to join in are encouraged to bring their classical instruments.  Representatives from the Community Cycling Center will be on hand to provide information about their year-round bicycle service and support programs for low-income youth and adults.

Beer and pizza will be provided by Hopworks Urban Brewery and HOTLIPS Pizza.

An activist, consultant and educator, Cannon has been working in the Montessori method of education for over 20 years. Okay, this is (not) going to hurt. South Waterfront Community Relations and the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine present “More Than Just Needles: An Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine.”

According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, an estimated 3.1 million U.S. adults had been treated with acupuncture the previous year. While acupuncture has become increasingly accessible and common, not everyone is familiar with the adjunctive therapies that traditional Chinese medicine has to offer. Practitioners use a combination of tools, including acupuncture, shiatsu, qigong, tuina and herbal medicine to gently adjust a patient’s specific physical and emotional imbalances.

Learn about the concept of qi, the vital energy that Chinese medicine seeks to balance, the differences between Chinese and Western approaches to health and what conditions Chinese medicine can best treat. One of OCOM’s licensed acupuncturists will provide sample treatments to interested participants.  To help you relax, we will have sake tastings and light appetizers.

The Right Brain Initiative seeks to achieve a measurable impact on learning by integrating the community’s arts and cultural resources into the education of every K-8 student in the region’s school districts. This collaboration among artists, educators, parents, business leaders, elected officials and philanthropists is working to develop a systemic and sustainable solution for providing arts learning opportunities for ALL children.

The residents of South Waterfront worked with Community Relations to plan and construct the garden this spring, resulting in 13 garden beds on the lot south of Atwater Place. The beds are completely full this year, but don’t despair. If you are a South Waterfront resident you can become a Friend of the Community Garden and help out. Hooray!  The Farmers Markets around Portland are beginning to open up and offer our region’s glorious bounty for our tables at home.  For those of us living here in the South Waterfront we have our pick of many different markets.  On Saturdays we can take the Portland Streetcar up to the South Park blocks for the PSU Farmer’s Market or on Wednesdays to the Downtown Market or on Thursdays we can go to the Ecotrust Market in the Pearl District.

…….my itinerary is not in stone yet but I will travel to Brussels for a solo exhibition which opens May 28th.  I will be building a large styrofoam robot on site, and as usual, about half of the entire exhibition will be site specific.  There are several pieces being fabricated and its always a challenge to work in such a way overseas.  I work closely with this particular gallery, Think.21, who understands me and my work intimately enough to negotiate complex production methods - even when I am not there.  I develop drawings and plans, research production methods, and then they source the best fabricator.  “The guy doesn’t even make his own work?” true, in some cases, I seek a level of high production so technically specific it only makes sense to use professional technical crafts people.  I am sure we can find plenty of masters throughout history whom have had their work constructed by teams of assistants, but it does sound odd to some who still only understand art making as a craft exercise.  I am a maker and always will be, but in my practice I continue to believe I can and should use every media, method and technical advantage I can access.

Join Glumac President Steven Straus, Gerding Edlen Principal Mark Edlen, and artist Buster Simpson for the unveiling of the inaugural Earth Day Art sculpture by Buster Simpson.

The sculpture will be an artistic representation of the growing movement towards using more sustainable construction practices, a reflection of our collective concern for our environment and deep involvement in protecting the places where we work and live. The sculpture will be dedicated to a Portland resident who has lead the sustainable movement in our own back yard.

“Bows to Plows - Two Liberty Ship bow remnants, with massive holds of concrete, currently reside on the riverside awaiting disposal or new purpose. Placement of the hulls on the South Waterfront Greenway installs these artifacts as sentinels. Sculpturally, these elements represent the transfer and acceptance of gravity and the embrace of mass and suggest shipyard inventory either during their making or their dismantling along the Willamette River. The pair of hulls illustrates the new paradigm of sustainability and stand to remind us of the utility and grace of transforming ’swords into plowshares’ for the healing of the earth.”

We received word from Portland Parks & Rec this week about the status of the Greenway - please see the Project Manager’s message below:

Regarding the project schedule - As many of you realize, one of the causes for the project delay, was the discovery of soil contamination.  After lengthy discussions between the Department of Environmental Quality, property owners, Portland Development Commission and Portland Parks & Recreation,  its been agreed that some additional sampling work needs to be undertaken along the greenway.   This work is expected to start in May.

In addition to the information we gather from the soil samples - we will incorporate the feedback from the discussion between the City and National Marine Fisheries that took place in late 2008.  These two additional information sources will inform the projects design so that an updated permit application can be submitted to the Army Corp of Engineers and National Marine Fisheries Service.  We anticipate being able to submit the updated permit applications in November 2009.

In October 2009, we will invite the community to review the updated designs so that you know how the project may have been amended.

According to the Daily Journal of Commerce Portland Parks and Rec has decided on a name for the neighborhood park here in South Waterfront.  It will be named after Elizabeth Caruthers, one of the original settlers of this area along the Willamette River back in the 19th century.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The Artist in Residence Program is a partnership  between the University of Oregon and South Waterfront Community Relations in cooperation with the resident headed South Waterfront 20/20 Art, Culture & Science Committee.  Each term a new artist will live and create in the SWF neighborhood while teaching at the UO Design School in the White Stag Building. South Waterfront will host four different artists through 2009 - 2010.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTIST:

“I wish to greet, thank and simply say how excited I am to be in the neighborhood as the new Artist in Residence for South Waterfront. By way of a collaboration between South Waterfront Community Relations, the University of Oregon, and myself, I will be occupying studio space and conducting my practice right here in the neighborhood. As an artist and associate professor of digital art I usually call the UO Eugene campus home, but as a portion of our art program now resides in the old White Stag building by the Burnside Bridge I get to spend the spring term in your fair city. As is my habit, when I am not teaching, I will be in the studio. Let me extend a generous and open invitation to any and all who can stop by during my open studio hours, or attend any of the events scheduled with me.

*My first request may sound odd, but your help is needed.

I have been making sculpture out of styrofoam for years. The kind of styrofoam you find when you unpack a computer or TV, appliances and sometimes furniture. Usually they are odd shapes or forms, they are white, and I love them.

*If anyone and everyone who reads this can drop off any pieces of styrofoam they have to either the John Ross concierge or the  John Ross Plaza Studio, I’d be enormously appreciative. I can’t use foam peanuts, bubble wrap or other packing stuff, just those typical styrofoam pieces. My intention is to build a site specific installation in the John Ross Plaza Studio, opening sometime in June.”

Our neighborhood park is finally on it’s way!  Portland Parks and Recreation sent out a new advisory on the state of the neighborhood park today.  It essentially details that due to the economic climate the construction bids came in UNDER projected costs, thus freeing up additional funds to add back in amenities that were originally cut due to the price tags.  Here are the amenities being added back into the South Waterfront Neighborhood Park:

> Formal Bocce Ball Court.

> Movable tables and chairs.

> Plant larger, more mature plants than originally planned.

> Apply soil amendments to all lawn areas.

>Steel edging for plant beds to help retain their form.

So - most importantly - here is the current construction schedule for the park:

March - July 2009: Construction

August 2009: Construction Complete - Urban Garden, Naturalized Area and paths open

August - Sept 2009: Lawn Establishment Period

October 2009: All Park Areas Open!

Trails are an integral part of our park and recreation system. They are used by people of all ages and abilities to exercise, relax, socialize, view wildlife, and travel to destinations such as school and work. Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) interprets the term ‘trail’ broadly to include sidewalks around parks, park pathways, sidewalks, and enhanced paths on green streets, as well as unpaved pathways in natural areas and regional multi-modal trails.

The Parks 2020 Vision plan identified “no trail standards” as an issue. It noted that trail standards are lacking for the many trail types, sizes, and materials needed in different settings. Impacts to sensitive habitat and stormwater quality and quantity must be considered.

PP&R has drafted these guidelines to aid staff in the design of trails and pathways in the entire parks system: regional trails, developed parks, and natural areas. They will also guide consultants, developers, and volunteer groups that build trails, whether designing a narrow footpath through a woodland, an exercise circuit in a lawn area or a waterfront promenade.

The January edition of the Portland Monthly had a nice long expose about our new Mayor - what I find most interesting is the long introduction that takes Amanda Burden on a tour through South Waterfornt.  Definately worth a read - which you can now do online (finally!) - read it here: Becoming Sam Adams.

Fred Leeson sure has been writing up a storm about the South Waterfront lately - he had another small article last Thursday about our Greenway and the current situation with the boat dock.  According to the article things are not sounding so good - the feds say the docks are nesting grounds for predators of young salmon. Last Thursday there was an interesting piece in the Oregonian talking about the future of the OHSU Schnitzer Campus.  It is especially interesting to note the “key elements” to the campus that OHSU is targeting.  The author Fred Leeson interviewed Mark Williams of OHSU for the article and other than the effects of the current economy their committment to the campus remains strong - for OHSU’s sake and our own let’s hope the economy turns around soon.  Also - if you have any questions for Mark Williams, be sure to attend the All- District Update in South Waterfront on January 28th - see the event calendar for details.

Last Friday the Daily Journal of Commerce published an article updating Portlanders on the status of the neighborhood park here in South Waterfront.  The bid process for construction of the park has been extended to January 15th, but the article states that construction will begin in late February 2009 - horay!  Read the full article HERE.

The City Council is agreesively reorganizing the city bureaus and one of the changes is that Comissioner Nick Fish will now be overseeing Portland Parks & Rec.   It will be interesting to see how Commissioner Fish works towards getting the South Waterfront Greenway and Neighborhood Park completed.   Here is the official announcement:

November 2008 Update

The Greenway Project Team is working to obtain the necessary permits for the Central District Greenway from state and federal natural resource agencies. Key features of the riverbank design are being updated to enhance natural conditions along the Willamette River and ensure a successful Greenway is built as soon as possible.

Improved Riverbank Design

Changes to the design concept have been developed through conversations with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in order to secure a federal permit.

The improved design includes:

• A gradually sloping, softened riverbank in the area between Whitaker and Pennoyer Streets will provide better habitat for fish and wildlife. This new design features a gravel and sand beach, more shallow water area, and space for native plants and trees. The previous design relied on large rocks, called rip-rap, to stabilize the steeper bank and protect against erosion.

• Trails and other public spaces will be placed above the ordinary high water level (about 18 feet) and held in place using a sheet-pile wall. The face of the wall will be vegetated and screened by willows, trees and other native plants. Careful placement of trees above and below the wall will balance habitat needs with the desire for views along the greenway.  

Contaminants Testing

Concerns about the presence of in-water contamination from past industrial uses will require additional testing this fall. Test results will help ensure that construction of the park also manages any remaining risk from past industrial activity.

A plan to gather sediment samples from the river bottom in the Central Greenway District was recently reviewed by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Samples will be gathered in November and then tested to ensure public health and the environment are protected before, during and after construction of the Greenway.

On Saturday, during the Riverfest festivities in South Waterfront (pictures to come), Dan Kent, the executive director of Salmon Safe gave a plaque to Homer Williams of Williams & Dame Development officially announcing that the South Waterfront is the first neighborhood to ever receive Salmon Safe certification. Certification means the neighborhood’s design and operations exceed regulatory mandates to protect the Willamette River and is a leader in restoring the health of the Willamette River and tributaries. This is a huge achievement for the South Waterfront district and yet more proof that this neighborhood is working hard to be the “greenest” in the nation.

On September 6th, living in South Waterfront will not only mean inhabiting the banks of the largest north flowing river in Oregon. Being in SWF on that day will also put you right in the heart of the action for Riverfest ‘08.

Riverfest has three goals: make the Willamette River a focus of fun and learning; actively improve river and watershed health through increased community engagement; and promote economic activity on the riverfront.

The festival, which kicks off on August 28th with The Oregon Symphony Waterfront Concert, features events throughout the city. It will be a big affair here in South Waterfront; Saturday September 6th is South Waterfront day, and the district will be pulling out all the stops.

Highlights include a SWF Neighborhood Park concert, produced by PDX Jazz with Bobby Torres, Devin Phillips Funk Band and Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra. Look for performances by Oregon Ballet Theatre, and as part of PICA’s TBA Festival, Sojourn Theatre. Countless attractions and activities will be on offer including a sailing regatta, large retail marketplace, food, wine & beer vendors featuring Salmon Safe Ponzi Vineyards and Deschutes Brewery, 85 foot hot air balloon, art exchange, children’s activity city, PdxDog ™ Town, bike tune-ups and an exciting announcement from Salmon Safe.

The third interview is with Heidi McBride, an art consultant and owner of Heidi McBride Gallery who lives in Meriwether West.

(Zara Logue) Tell us about your background – where you grew up, where you‘ve lived…

(Heidi McBride) I‘m a Portland native. I went to high school here, then moved to San Francisco for college, taught for a year in Japan and traveled around Asia and wound up back in Portland. I lived in New Jersey briefly. I’ve been to Europe several times, Thailand, South Korea, Guam, China, Amsterdam. My college degree is in communications and business but I‘ve always been interested in art, design, and fashion. My parents are art hobbyists, my dad‘s an oil painter.

(ZL) How would you describe what it is you do for a living?

(HM) It‘s a blend of a traditional gallery and design consultancy. I look at the art-buying process as fluid and personal. I escort people on a path to buy art that moves them. I believe that owning original artwork and having it around you can shape the way you live – either in business or in a personal setting. I’m an art match-maker. I believe in presenting a unique and wide perspective but my number one priority is to help people discover what they‘re really connecting with. Sometimes that‘s a finished piece of art and sometimes they envision something and we end up commissioning a site-specific piece.

(ZL) Going back to what you just said about having artwork around you and how it affects you – you literally live among the pieces you represent – they‘re all over your home and in all of your rooms. How does the artwork affect you?

(HM) I‘m sensitive to energy. Being around the work is like being among stories. These are all original, authentic stories being told by each artist. I get to have experiences with each piece of art because I‘m constantly moving things around. I develop relationships with each of them over time. And I enjoy creating different moods in different rooms – a peaceful environment in the bedroom, more dynamic in the living spaces. For people new to my practice, it‘s a really rich environment. It takes them a moment to orient themselves when they come over. And I should say that it‘s a private gallery and the visitations are by appointment, it‘s not a public showroom.

(ZL) It seems like a really brave venture to go out on your own and create a practice that is meaningful to you without any existing business model. How did you get the guts/inspiration to do it?

(HM) Over the course of my lifetime, I‘ve developed a sense of where art, authenticity, and life connect. I was looking for a place where those values and my skills could come together and didn‘t see anything. I literally started having dreams about this thing that would connect my interests and passions. Then I started asking for it and things just starting coming. Even though it didn‘t seem like the right time. Financially, I wasn‘t in a place to start a business but my job was laying people off so I took the opportunity. I‘ve always been someone to follow my gut and I just went for it. It wasn‘t strategic, I wasn‘t saying to myself, “oh I want to start a business – what should it be?” it was more intuitive.

(ZL) How did you end up in the South Waterfront?

(HM) I had an idea of the layout of the space I wanted. I wanted something where I could have a holistic experience, both for myself and clients. The culinary arts where a part of that – I wanted to be able to host people for gatherings around food and art. I also wanted the business aspect to be integrated with my life, not a museum. I saw the listing for a place at the Meriwether and really just came down to see it so I could check it off my list. I didn‘t know a whole lot about the area. But when I saw the space the first time my heart started beating and I knew it was right. And everything going on the area was just right, things were emerging.

(ZL) Are most of the artists you represent local? How do you find each other?

(HM) I have art and artists from around the world but there‘s so much talent here that doesn‘t get enough attention. I‘m beginning to focus on Pacific Northwest artists, though. Lots of artists are doing well in other markets and don‘t have representation here in Portland. In terms of how I find artists, the talent seems to find me. I‘ve always attracted talented people to me, somehow. My role as a curator means selecting the strongest pieces of work and artistic voices to make as options for my clients.

(ZL) How do you keep up with what‘s going on in contemporary art and design?

(HM) I‘m lucky to have an amazing network of friends and colleagues that help keep me informed. I do my part, reading the paper and the magazines, visiting museums and other galleries and reading blogs. Although I have to admit, there is so much happening in the arts around the world, that it is nearly impossible to keep on top of it all.

I work with anyone with an interest in owning original artwork, from seasoned collectors to people just getting started. And the range of work that I have reflects that. I also do a lot of work for people in their homes and businesses. And site-specific installations and custom pieces as well. My goal is to make outstanding & meaningful original art available to anyone who is interested in owning it.

Essentially an art-focused garage sale and swap, the event is a way for new, tenured and future residents of the South Waterfront to find new homes for pieces of artwork that no longer have meaning or don’t fit the aestetik of their condo. We originally designed the event because we realized many of us were downsizing and redecorating and that a lot of perfectly nice artwork was being displaced in the process. We thought, wouldn’t it be wonderful if others from our neighborhood or from outside the community could adopt those pieces?

Re-use | Recycle… right?

Last year, each selling participant got a plot of land to turn into their own little showcase space. Some people had a few pieces to display, which they set on blankets on the ground, while others had many works to sell and used the cyclone fence along Pennayor as a gallery wall. Prices were all over the map and the ‘vendors’ each handled their own exchanges.

This year, we will offer a similar scenario. Those selling can set up their niche in the best way to suite their collection. They will staff their area and will find it fun to haggle and tell the stories behind their artwork to potential buyers (man, did we hear some stories last year). In addition to earning a bit of extra cash, those representing their own art will find it to be quite the social scene. (In other words, bring your yard chair, a cold beverage and make yourself at home.. it’s going to be a lot of fun!)

If you cant afford to spend your day talking oils and prints, we are setting up an art pool that enables the seller to include their pieces in the group section. Participating pool sellers will each take a shift during the 11-5pm open hours or helping break down the event.

This is also a charitable event (sort of).
Any unsold art that is not collected from the pool will be donated to a local non profit. Net profits raised from the fee of admission will be applied towards future Art, Culture and Science activities.

Sustainability asks us to live and work in a way that allows our children and future generations to flourish. How do we know if we’re doing the right thing? The Natural Step provides a framework for understanding sustainability which can be used as a guide for short and long term decision making.

The Natural Step is a global not-for-profit advisory and education organization dedicated to sustainable development. It gives decision-makers a shared, science-based understanding of sustainability and a unifying framework for moving towards sustainability.

One-of-a-kind and unrepeatable, Promenade is an episodic dance, sound and light performance event that involves more than 30 performers, bicycles and a rising moon. Coinciding with Bill Will’s July guest artist residency as part of the AiR Program, Promenade will emerge from Will’s installation - 20 x 20, on Saturday evening, July 19th. Almost two city blocks in scale, 20 x 20 is a site-specific installation using simple materials that calls attention to the land, its simple proportions and subtle topography, as well as emphasizes the movement of the sun and wind throughout the day and the changes evoked by the natural phenomena of sunset, dusk, and moonrise.  Promenade invites the viewer to traverse the installation at one’s leisure - sitting, resting and engaging as desired. One night only, Promenade references the rural, the urban, the past and the future of this area of the city. 

Our own South Waterfront Sustainable Lifestyle and Transportation Committee, along with the folks with South Waterfront Community Relations have put together a series of talks with local gurus of sustainability. The first talk was in April with Eban Goodstein, Professor of Economics at Lewis & Clark College and author of several books about sustainability and it’s affect on the economy.

The next talk in the series is coming up next week - July 10th to be exact - and will feature Regina Hauser, the Executive Director of the Oregon Natural Step Network. Hauser will pick up where Prof. Goodstein has left off, by presenting on the Natural Step framework, which provides the principals and steps to take to lead a more sustainable lifestyle. The last event will feature Michael Armstrong, the Deputy Director of the City of Portland’s Office of Sustainable Development. The date of this event has yet to be determined - so stay tuned! I hope to see everyone at the upcoming speakers, they are particularly relevant to the culture of the South Waterfront.
